The Surrounding Area

The gîtes are ideally located with easy and rapid access from the motorway and only 2 hours drive from Spain and the Pyrenees. The village of Salles has kept its rural character with all amenities needed to the everyday way of life (bakeries, newsagent, restaurants, supermarkets, doctors, chemists etc.).

A little flavour of the surroundings:

  • The pine forest of the Landes and its river Leyre (also known as Little Amazon).
  • Oyster farms and their traditional fishing village and atmosphere
  • Best kept secret rural villages, their culture and charm
  • Sanguinet lake, 2nd largest lake of France (with an area of 5600 hectares) offers many watersport activities, shallow water and white sandy beaches
  • Hostens lake renowned for its watersport’s activities; its beaches and walking trails
  • The spectacular Dune du Pyla (the highest sand dune of Europe – 115m high)
  • The Atlantic coast and the Silver coast and their golden sandy beaches, the longest in Europe (126km so plenty to choose from!)
  • The “banc d’Arguin” (also known as “Les passes”) where both the Atlantic and the Bassin meet
  • “L’Ile aux oiseaux” and its “Cabannes Tchanquées” (only accessible by boat that can be rented or trips available)
  • Arcachon, its beaches, yachting and fishing harbours, boutiques, sporting and cultural activities, restaurants, seafood platters and famous Casino

  • Bordeaux, listed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the route of Santiago de Compostela with its magnificent monuments, well known architecture, cathedrals, theatres, chateaux, a large choice of boutiques, arts and cultural events and of course its divine and world famous gastronomy and wine production.
  • The area of St Emilion, Medoc, Sauternes and Cognac, their vineyards and wine houses will no doubt seduce both your palate and eyes.
